Born and raised in Brooklyn the 52-year-old detective is Italian descent. He served three years in the USMC, and after being honorably discharged, he decided to join the New York Police Department where Steve DiSchiavi worked for over 20 years as a homicide detective.

He and his family moved to New Springville in 1986. He was shortly given a promotion to detective and assigned to Manhattan plainclothes homicide division. He has since then worked many cases, but one of his most prolific cases was the 2001 murder-massacre in Manhattan that saw three people tragically lose their lives and left five others wounded.
